There were 2,896K boarding in July 2020 compared to approximately 4,953K in July 2019, a decrease of approximately 2,057K boardings (or 42 percent) on local bus service. The major factor contributing to the significant ridership decrease in local bus, light rail, and Park & Ride bus was COVID-19. There were other factors that also contributed to METRO ridership loss included: 1) Independence Day 2020 was observed on Friday, July 3rd and the actual holiday was Saturday, July 4th compared to Independence Day in 2019 was observed on Thursday, July 4th. 2) “Stay Home, Work Home” order still in effect; and 3) Adjustment of service levels to reflect decreasing ridership and reduced operator availability during the month. Additionally, measures taken to encourage social distancing included restricting the number of passengers boarding any individual bus and / or rail car.
Average Daily Ridership: Weekday / Saturday / Sunday
Average daily ridership decreased on Weekday, Saturday and Sunday. Weekday average daily ridership decreased by approximately 79K boardings (or 44 percent), Saturday average daily ridership decreased by approximately 46K boardings (or 37 percent) and Sunday average daily ridership decreased by 32K (or 33 percent) in July 2020 compared to July 2019.
Light Rail
Monthly Total
There were 752K boardings on all three light rail lines and 5K boardings on bus bridges in July 2020 compared to 1,594K boardings on all three light rail lines and 0K boardings on bus bridges in July 2019, a decrease of 836K boardings (or 53% percent). Red line ridership decreased by 52 percent, Green line ridership decreased by 53 percent, and Purple line ridership decreased by 61 percent in July 2020 compared to July 2019.
Average Daily Ridership: Weekday / Saturday / Sunday
Average Weekday ridership on the Red, Green, and Purple lines decreased by 25K boardings (or 51 percent), decreased by 3K boardings (or 54 percent) and decreased by 3K boardings (or 62 percent) respectively in July 2020 compared to July 2019. Average Saturday ridership on Red, Green, and Purple lines decreased by 12K boardings (or 53 percent), decreased by 2K boardings (or 55 percent), and decreased by 2K boardings (or 62 percent) respectively in July 2020 compared to July 2019. Average Sunday ridership on Red, Green, and Purple lines decreased by 8K (or 42 percent), decreased by 2K boardings (or 49 percent), and decreased by less than 2K boardings (or 50 percent) respectively in July 2020 compared to July 2019. .

Average Weekday ridership decreased by 110K boardings (or 46 percent) Saturday average daily ridership decreased by 62K boardings (or 41 percent) while and average Sunday ridership decreased by 43K boardings (or 35 percent) in July 2020 compared to July 2019.

There were approximately 79K Park and Ride boardings in July 2020 compared to approximately 684K boardings in July 2019, a decrease of approximately 605K boardings (or 88 percent).

Average Weekday ridership in July 2020 was approximately 4K boardings compared to 31K boardings July 2019, a decrease of approximately 28K boardings (or 89 percent)

There were approximately 3,732K boardings on the entire fixed-route network in July 2020 compared to 7,230K boardings in July 2019, a decrease of approximately 3,498K boardings (or 48 percent). Relevant factors were noted earlier and are included in the table above.

Average daily ridership decreased on Weekday, Saturday and Sunday in July 2020 compared to July 2019 prior to service modifications for COVID-19. Average weekday ridership decreased by 137K boardings (or 51 percent), average Saturday ridership decreased by 62K boardings (or 41 percent) and average Sunday ridership decreased by 43K (or 35 percent) in July 2020 compared to July 2019.
