METRO STAR is in Houston
Greater Houston’s METRO STAR is a service to help you save
money, reduce your stress and relax to and from work. STAR offers
hundreds of scheduled routes serving an eight-county area, including
Harris, Brazoria, Chambers, Fort Bend, Galveston, Liberty, Montgomery
STAR is a Cost-Effective Public Transportation Option
STAR riders share the cost of the vehicle, fuel, maintenance
routes and any parking and tolls. Individual cost is divided by the
number of riders creating a personal "fraction" of the total cost.
Because STAR vanpools are driven by one or more of the riders, the costs
are often less than other public and private options. STAR vanpools are
one of the most efficient uses for public and private funding. This
efficiency allow STAR vanpools to form quickly and serve locations that
other transit services do not or cannot serve cost effectively.
NEW Customized STAR Routes
New STAR routes are forming all the time! If we don’t have an existing
route that matches your schedule, we will work to create one. If you
know others interested in vanpooling who live and work near you, call us
and we can help create a STAR route. STAR routes that travel into and
out of Harris County can use the extensive network of HOV and diamond
lanes to help reduce your travel time.
STAR Public Financial Support
As a public transportation service, STAR receives financial support
from METRO, Texas Department of Transportation, and the Federal Highway
Administration. This funding support serves as an additional discount
for each STAR route to make the cost for each participant even more
affordable. Depending on the size of the STAR vanpools, the monthly
discount ranges from $150 to $450.
Employer STAR Support
Employers in the STAR service area have recognized and appreciate the
value of STAR vanpool routes serving employment locations. Many of these
employers have also chosen to provide additional financial support to
employees as a transportation benefit to help further reduce the
individual monthly STAR cost. Check with your employer to see if a
transit and vanpool financial benefit is provided. The STAR team also
actively works with area employers to encourage an employer "copay."
STAR Vanpooling – The Safest Way to Go
STAR is among the safest options for your commute to work. According
to the National Transportation Safety Board, vanpooling is the safest
form of public transportation with the least amount of reported
accidents. Vanpooling is even safer than most commute methods, including
personal vehicle usage.
STAR is a Public Transportation Service
The STAR vanpool route network is one of the METRO family of
services, including local transit, express bus service, METRORail, STAR
vanpools and METROLift. All STAR routes are open to the public. The STAR
team will work to find the best existing STAR route for you. You will
have a reserved seat for your ride to and from work.
Emergency Ride/Guaranteed Ride Home
As a STAR customer, you are automatically enrolled in the Emergency
Ride program. Registered full-time STAR riders, who have a qualifying
midday emergency or unscheduled overtime, are eligible for a free ride
home! Now, that’s peace of mind. All you have to do is call the
Customer Service Center at 713-224-RIDE.
STAR Vanpools – Quick and Easy to Start
The METRO STAR vanpool program provides the quickest "new
start" option of all METRO services. A dedicated STAR team can help form
new routes by identifying riders, drivers, arranging individual costs,
and working with employers to help promote and support STAR routes.
STAR Ongoing Support
For existing STAR routes, STAR actively works to keep seats
full which results in the lowest possible cost for each rider. STAR can
locate and place riders on STAR routes from many neighboring employers
to help maximize ridership and low cost.
