Local Bus

Monthly Total

There were 2,683K boarding in August 2020 compared to approximately 5,210K in August 2019, a decrease of 2,526K boardings (or 48 percent) on local bus service. The major factor contributing to the significant ridership decrease in local bus, light rail, and Park & Ride bus was COVID-19. There were other factors that also contributed to METRO ridership loss included 1) A negative calendar mix in August 2020 of one fewer weekday and one more Sunday relative to the previous year contributed to the ridership loss. 2) “Stay Home, Work Home” order still in effect; and 3) adjustment of service levels to reflect decreasing ridership and reduced operator availability during the month. Additionally, measures taken to encourage social distancing included restricting the number of passengers boarding any individual bus and / or rail car.

Average Daily Ridership: Weekday / Saturday / Sunday

Average daily ridership decreased on Weekday, Saturday and Sunday. Weekday average daily ridership decreased by approximately 91K boardings (or 48 percent), Saturday average daily ridership decreased by approximately 53K boardings (or 41 percent) and Sunday average daily ridership decreased by approximately 38K (or 37 percent) in August 2020 compared to August 2019.

​Light Rail

There were 749K boardings on all three light rail lines and 0 boardings on bus bridges in August 2020 compared to 1,628K boardings on all three light rail lines and 0 boardings on bus bridges in August 2019, a decrease of 879K boardings (or 54% percent). Red line ridership decreased by 53 percent, Green line ridership decreased by 53 percent, and Purple line ridership decreased by 66 percent in August 2020 compared to August 2019.

Average Daily Ridership: Weekday / Saturday / Sunday

Average Weekday ridership on the Red, Green, and Purple lines decreased by 26K boardings (or 50 percent), decreased by 3K boardings (or 53 percent) and decreased by 4K boardings (or 69 percent) respectively in August 2020 compared to August 2019. Average Saturday ridership on Red, Green, and Purple lines decreased by 11K boardings (or 48 percent), decreased by 2K boardings (or 54 percent), and decreased by 3K boardings (or 63 percent) respectively in August 2020 compared to August 2019. Average Sunday ridership on Red, Green, and Purple lines decreased by 7K (or 40 percent), decreased by 2K boardings (or 46 percent), and decreased by less than 2K boardings (or 50 percent) respectively in August 2020 compared to August 2019.

There were 3,432K boardings in August 2020 compared to 6,837K in August 2019, a decrease of approximately 3,405K boardings (or 50 percent).

Average local network decreased on Weekday, Saturday, and Sunday in August 2020 compared to August 2019. Average Weekday ridership decreased by approximately 124K boardings (or 49 percent) Saturday average daily ridership decreased by approximately 69K boardings (or 43 percent) while and average Sunday ridership decreased by 48K boardings (or 38 percent) in August 2020 compared to August 2019.

Park & Ride

Monthly Total

There were approximately 74K Park and Ride boardings in August 2020 compared to 723K boardings in August 2019, a decrease of approximately 650K boardings (or 90 percent). 

Average Daily Ridership: Weekday

Average Weekday ridership in August 2020 was approximately 4K boardings compared to 33K boardings August 2019, a decrease of 29K boardings (or 88 percent).

Entire Network Summary

Monthly Total

There were approximately 3,506K boardings on the entire fixed-route network in August 2020 compared to 7,560K boardings in August 2019, a decrease of 4,054K boardings (or 54 percent). Relevant factors were noted earlier and are included in the table above.

Average Daily Ridership: Weekday / Saturday / Sunday

Average daily ridership decreased on Weekday, Saturday and Sunday in August 2020 compared to August 2019 prior to service modifications for COVID-19. Average weekday ridership decreased by 153K boardings (or 53 percent), average Saturday ridership decreased by approximately 69K boardings (or 43 percent) and average Sunday ridership decreased by 48K (or 38 percent) in August 2020 compared to August 2019.
