There were 2,707K boarding in May 2020 compared to approximately 5,121K in May 2019, a decrease of approximately 2,413K boardings (or 47 percent) on local bus service. The major factor contributing to the significant ridership decrease in local bus, light rail, and Park & Ride bus was COVID-19. There were other factors that also contributed to METRO ridership loss included: 1) A negative calendar mix of two fewer weekdays and one more Saturday and Sunday relative to the previous year; 2) “Stay Home, Work Home” order still in effect; and 3) adjustment of service levels to reflect decreasing ridership and reduced operator availability during the month. Additionally, measures taken to encourage social distancing included restricting the number of passengers boarding any individual bus and / or rail car.

Average daily ridership decreased on Weekday, Saturday and Sunday. Weekday average daily ridership decreased by approximately 95K boardings (or 50 percent), Saturday average daily ridership decreased by approximately 48K
boardings (or 39 percent) and Sunday average daily ridership decreased by approximately 36K (or 36 percent) in May 2020 compared to May 2019.
Light Rail

There were 692K boardings on all three light rail lines and 10 boardings on bus bridges in May 2020 compared to 1,411K boardings on all three light rail lines and 24K boardings on bus bridges in May 2019, a decrease of 743K boardings (or 52% percent). Red line ridership decreased by 51 percent, Green line ridership decreased by 52 percent, and Purple line ridership decreased by 46 percent in May 2020 compared to May 2019.

Average Weekday ridership on the Red, Green, and Purple lines decreased by 26K boardings (or 54 percent), decreased by less than 3K boardings (or 58 percent) and decreased by less than 3K boardings (or 57 percent) respectively in May 2020 compared to May 2019. Average Saturday ridership on Red, Green, and Purple lines decreased by 9K boardings (or 41 percent), decreased by less than 3K boardings (or 62 percent), and decreased by less than 3K boardings (or 57 percent) respectively in May 2020 compared to May 2019. Average Sunday ridership on Red, Green, and Purple lines decreased by less than 8K (or 40 percent), decreased by less than 2K boardings (or 60 percent), and decreased by less than 2K boardings (or 47 percent) respectively in May 2020 compared to May 2019.

Average Weekday ridership in May 2020 was less than 3K boardings compared to 31K boardings May 2019, a decrease of approximately 29K boardings (or 92 percent)

Average daily ridership decreased on Weekday, Saturday and Sunday in May 2020 compared to May 2019 prior to service modifications for COVID-19. Average weekday ridership decreased by 155K boardings (or 55 percent), Average Saturday ridership decreased by approximately 77K boardings (or 51 percent) and average Sunday ridership decreased by 47K (or 38 percent) in May 2020 compared to May 2019.
