The above table serves as a snapshot of the typical factors that impact ridership, and illustrates the differences which exist between the current month and the same month in the previous year. If a change occurred, it is categorized to represent a (typically) positive, negative or neutral impact on ridership. More details on the observed impacts are noted in the description of ridership results below.

Local Bus

Monthly Total

There were approximately 5,121K boarding in May 2019 compared to 5,152K in May 2018, a decrease of approximately 32K boardings (or 1 percent) on local bus service There was no change in calendar mix in May 2019 relative to May 2018. The primary factor contributing to the ridership decrease was over 7 inches of rain in 2019 compared to 3 inches of rain in 2018.

Average Daily Ridership: Weekday / Saturday / Sunday

Average daily ridership increased on Weekday, Saturday and Sunday. Weekday average daily ridership increased by approximately 1K boardings (or less than 1 percent), Saturday average daily ridership increased by approximately 2K boardings (or 1 percent) and Sunday average daily ridership increased by 2K (or 2 percent) in May 2019 compared to May 2018.

​Light Rail

Monthly Total

There were 1,411K boardings on all three light rail lines in May 2019 compared to 1,564K boardings in May 2018, a decrease of 153K boardings (or 10 percent). Red line ridership decreased by 8 percent, Green line ridership decreased by 12 percent, and Purple line ridership decreased by 20 percent in May 2019 compared to May 2018. There was no change in calendar mix in May 2019 relative to May 2018. There were 4 service interruption days in May 2019 on the Red line compared to none in May 2018. During this time period, the Red line was shut down from the University of Houston - Downtown to Northline Transit Center. Additionally, there were 5 service interruption days on the Green line compared to none in May of 2018 and 7 service interruption days in the Purple line in May 2019 compared to none in 2018.

Average Daily Ridership: Weekday / Saturday / Sunday

Average Weekday ridership on the Red, Green, and Purple lines decreased by less than 1K boardings (or 1 percent), increased by less than 1K boardings (or 4 percent) and decreased by less than 1K boardings (or 3 percent) respectively in May 2019 compared to May 2018. Average Saturday ridership on Red, Green, and Purple lines decreased by less than 2K boardings (or 8 percent), decreased by less than 1K boardings (or 2 percent), and increased by less than 1K boardings or (or 2 percent) respectively in May 2019 compared to May 2018. Average Sunday ridership on Red, Green, and Purple lines increased by less than 1K (or 3 percent), increased by less than 1K boardings (or 4 percent), and increased by less than 1K boardings (or 9 percent) respectively in May 2019 compared to May 2018 respectively.

There were approximately 6,556K boardings in May 2019 compared to approximately 6,717K in May 2018, a decrease of 161K boardings (or 2 percent).

Average Daily Ridership: Weekday / Saturday / Sunday

Average local network increased on Weekday and Sunday and decreased on Saturday in May 2019 compared to May 2018.  Average Weekday ridership increased by approximately 1K boardings (or less than 1 percent), average Saturday ridership decreased by less than 100 boardings (or less than 1 percent) and average Sunday ridership increased by 3K boardings (or 3 percent) in May 2019 compared to May 2018.

Park & Ride

Monthly Total

There were approximately 681K Park and Ride boardings in May 2019 compared to approximately 686K boardings in May 2018, a decrease of approximately 5K boardings (or 1 percent).

Average Daily Ridership: Weekday

Average Weekday ridership in May 2019 was 31K boardings compared to approximately 31K boardings May 2018, an increase of less than 1K boardings (or less than 1 percent).

Entire Network Summary

Monthly Total

There were approximately 7,237K boardings on the entire fixed-route network in May 2019 compared to approximately 7,403K boardings in May 2018, a decrease of approximately 166K boardings (or 2 percent). Relevant factors were noted earlier and are included in the table above.

Average Daily Ridership: Weekday / Saturday / Sunday

Average daily ridership for the fixed-route network increased on Weekday and Sunday, and decreased on Saturday in May 2019 compared to May 2018. Average weekday ridership increased by approximately 1K boardings (or less than 1 percent), average Saturday ridership decreased by less than 1K boardings (or less than 1 percent) and average Sunday ridership increased by 3K (or 3 percent) in May 2019 compared to May 2018.
