Monthly Total
There were approximately 2,503K boarding in April 2020 compared to approximately 5,000K in April 2019, a decrease of 2,497K boardings (or 50 percent) on local bus service. The major factor contributing to the significant ridership decrease in local bus, light rail, and Park & Ride bus was COVID-19. Actions during April 2020 that negatively affected METRO ridership included: 1) termination of all non-TMC Park & Ride services; 2) “Stay Home, Work Home” order still in effect; and 3) adjustment of service levels to reflect decreasing ridership and reduced operator availability during the month. Additionally, measures taken to encourage social distancing included restricting the number of passengers boarding any individual bus and / or rail car.
Average Daily Ridership: Weekday / Saturday / Sunday
Average daily ridership decreased on Weekday, Saturday and Sunday. Weekday average daily ridership decreased by 110K boardings (or 58 percent), Saturday average daily ridership decreased by 52K boardings (or 44 percent) and Sunday average daily ridership decreased by approximately 41K (or 42 percent) in April 2020 compared to April 2019.
Light Rail

There were 554K boardings on all three light rail lines and 0K boardings on bus bridges in April 2020 compared to 1,568K boardings on all three light rail lines and 0 boardings on bus bridges in April 2019, a decrease of 1,014K boardings (or 65% percent). Red line ridership decreased by 61 percent, Green line ridership decreased by 99 percent, and Purple line ridership decreased by 64 percent in April 2020 compared to April 2019.

Average Weekday ridership on the Red, Green, and Purple lines decreased by 32K boardings (or 63 percent), decreased by less than 5K boardings (or 99 percent) and decreased by less than 5K boardings (or 66 percent) respectively in April 2020 compared to April 2019. Average Saturday ridership on Red, Green, and Purple lines decreased by 12K boardings (or 52 percent), decreased by 4K boardings (or 100 percent), and decreased by 3K boardings (or 65 percent) respectively in April 2020 compared to April 2019. Average Sunday ridership on Red, Green, and Purple lines decreased by less than 9K (or 44 percent), decreased by less than 4K boardings (or 100 percent), and decreased by more than 2K boardings (or 56 percent) respectively in April 2020 compared to April 2019.

Average Weekday ridership decreased by approximately 151K boardings (or 60 percent) Saturday average daily ridership decreased by approximately 72K boardings (or 47 percent) while and average Sunday ridership decreased by 55K boardings (or 44 percent) in April 2020 compared to April 2019.

There were approximately 22K Park and Ride boardings in April 2020 compared to 710K boardings in April 2019, a decrease of 688K boardings (or 97 percent).

Average Weekday ridership in April 2020 was 1K boardings compared to 33K boardings April 2019, a decrease of 32K boardings (or 97 percent).

There were approximately 3,079K boardings on the entire fixed-route network in April 2020 compared to approximately 7,278K boardings in April 2019, a decrease of 4,199K boardings (or 58 percent). Relevant factors were noted earlier and are included in the table above.
Average Daily Ridership: Weekday / Saturday / Sunday
Average daily ridership decreased on Weekday, Saturday and Sunday in April 2020 compared to April 2019 prior to service modifications for COVID-19. Average weekday ridership decreased by 183K boardings (or 64 percent), Average Saturday ridership decreased by approximately 85K boardings (or 56 percent) and average Sunday ridership decreased by 55K (or 44 percent) in April 2020 compared to April 2019.
