Arts in Transit Leeland / Third Ward

Leeland / Third Ward platform

Artwork for the Leeland / Third Ward Station highlights the brave pioneer spirit of early African Americans and incredible sense of community. The visual elements of this platform feature the Moroccan-born Estaban, the first African American to arrive in the state in 1528, as well as a tribute to Houston’s historic Third Ward, which is still the cornerstone of Houston’s African American community. Emancipation Park, located within the Third Ward, is one of the city’s oldest institutions, dating back to 1872.
