Freedom to Move: METRO Makes Transit Easier for Houston's Seniors

Seniors can ride METRO for free or at a discounted rate.

 

Whether it’s running errands, visiting loved ones, or simply enjoying a day out, METRO offers discounted fares, senior-friendly services, and personalized support to help older adults stay mobile and connected. Here’s how Houston’s older residents can take full advantage of METRO’s offerings to stay connected and confident on the move. 

Affordable Fares for Seniors

METRO offers generous fare discounts for older adults: 

Ages 65–69 get half fare for local bus, METRORail, curb2curb and Park & Ride 
Ages 70+ ride completely freewith a discounted Metro Q® Fare Card 

To access these discounts, seniors must apply for a discounted METRO Q® Fare Card, by providing proof of age and a valid ID.  These cards are reloadable online, by phone, or at various retail locations throughout Houston. 

Seniors can ride METRO for free or at a discounted rate.


Navigating METRO Services

  • Local buses: All buses are ADA-accessible with ramps/lifts, “kneeling” feature, priority seats, securement belts, audio/visual announcements, and accessible stops 

    METRORail: Our rail services all have level boarding, wheelchair spaces, audible announcements, and ADA-compliant platforms 

    curb2curbOn-demand van service in select communities; accessible for mobility devices, with securement and boarding assistance 

    Park & Ride: Ideal for seniors living outside the 610 Loop, offering a cost-effective, ADA-compliant commute option. Our operators are trained and always happy to help with boarding, announcements, and other rider needs 

    METROLift: Door-to-door shared rides for qualifying individuals with disabilities- free if you hold a METROLift Freedom Q Card 

    Ask drivers for help—they’re trained to assist with boarding and alerts 

    METRO is committed to making public transit easier, safer, and more accessible for older adults. With discounted fares—including free rides for those 70 and older—plus accessible vehicles, improved infrastructure, and helpful travel-training programs, seniors have more freedom than ever to move around the city with confidence.
