METRO Introduces New Urban Design Page

METRO is proud to announce the launch of its new Urban Design web page! This resource provides comprehensive information about urban design principles and practices and shows how taking a people-first approach to transportation can help improve quality of life, reduce traffic congestion, and create more equitable communities for everyone.

The effort is part of METRO's ongoing commitment to improving its transit system across the region. The page details urban design principles such as environmental resilience, sustainable development, community diversity, and the customer experience. It also highlights the significance of creating safe and comfortable transit environments for all road users, including pedestrians, cyclists, transit riders, and drivers, and provides updates about METRO's Arts in Transit Program.

METRO Urban Design Director Brandie Lockett says urban design aims to create sustainable, equitable, and aesthetically pleasing spaces that promote social interaction and connection.

“By prioritizing the needs of people first, we can develop vibrant, more livable neighborhoods,” said Lockett.

Putting People First: By prioritizing the needs of people first, METRO hopes to help create vibrant, more livable neighborhoods.

Lockett adds that a transit system that incorporates urban design best practices gives residents more ways to choose how they get around, reducing the number of cars on the road and promoting alternative forms of transportation like transit, biking, and walking.

“Many studies illustrate how reduced dependence on automobiles is associated with higher physical activity levels, better community health, safety and civic engagement, and greater economic well-being,” she said.

By providing citizens with easy access to information and resources, METRO hopes to empower communities to take an active role in shaping the future of their neighborhoods.

METRO believes that by working together, communities can be created that are not only beautiful and functional but also equitable and sustainable. Explore METRO’s new Urban Design web page today and help shape the future of our region!
