METRONow Turns One: A Year of Real Progress

METRONow celebrates its one year of progress in the Houston region.

One year ago, METRO launched METRONow with a clear focus: improve the everyday transit experience by investing in what matters most — safety, cleanliness, reliability, and accessibility.

Today, that focus is turning into real, visible progress across the region.

In just one year, METRO has made major investments to strengthen the foundation of the system and improve daily trips for riders. That includes $200 million in roadway repairs and upgrades, helping buses move more smoothly through some of Houston’s busiest corridors and improving on-time performance where it matters most.

Riders are also seeing the difference at their stops. METRO has installed and rehabilitated nearly 2,000 bus shelters systemwide, creating more comfortable spaces with added shade, lighting, and seating. Across the region, 5,600 bus stops have been upgraded for accessibility, along with 320,000 square feet of sidewalk improvements, making it easier for more people to reach transit and ride with confidence.

The METRONow Plan has rehabilitated numerous roads across the region to improve on-time performance.

Service has expanded in ways that connect people to opportunity. The launch of the Downtown Direct 500 introduced a fast, reliable link between Downtown Houston and both major airports. In just three months, the service has already provided more than 25,000 rides, offering a new, convenient option for travelers, workers, and visitors.

Behind the scenes, METRO has been strengthening the system to support more reliable service. The agency has received 329 new buses, helping improve consistency and support growing demand across the network.

Safety remains at the center of this work. Over the past year, METRO increased police staffing by 26%, reaching full staffing levels and expanding its presence across the system. These efforts are helping create a safer, more secure environment for both riders and employees.

The Missouri City Park and Ride opened three months ahead of schedule in early 2025.

METRO has also elevated the customer experience through increased investment in cleanliness. With $2.4 million dedicated to expanded cleaning efforts, bus stops, transit centers, and rail platforms are being cleaned more frequently, creating a more welcoming system day in and day out.

A passenger is about to board the 82 Westheimer bus.

And getting on board is now easier than ever. The new RideMETRO Fare System introduces faster, tap-and-go payments and more flexible ways to pay, helping riders move through the system with less friction.

METRO's new fare system launched in February 2026.

Building on the Momentum

METRONow has made great progress in its first year, and this is just the beginning.

More improvements are already underway — from additional service enhancements and infrastructure upgrades to continued investments in safety, accessibility, and rider experience. Each step builds on the same goal: a transit system that works better for the people who rely on it every day.

Because when transit works better, Houston moves better.
