MPD Ready to Connect with Community at National Night Out Events

The METRO Police Department (MPD) is preparing to participate in various National Night Out events throughout the Houston area next week. MPD officers are eagerly looking forward to the opportunities to strengthen relationships with residents.

What is National Night Out?

National Night Out is a nationwide event that takes place on the first Tuesday of August for most of the country, but it’s the first Tuesday in October here in Texas. Neighborhoods come together, fostering a sense of community, camaraderie, and trust. The primary goal, however, is to promote safer neighborhoods, prevent crime, and strengthen partnerships between law enforcement agencies and the people they serve.

METRO Police Chief Vera Bumpers emphasized MPD's enduring dedication to community policing and engagement, highlighting National Night Out as a standout event of the year.

“Taking part in National Night Out events gives METRO police officers an opportunity to connect with residents," Bumpers said. "It's a practical setting where they can listen to what residents have to say and build relationships that go beyond just their law enforcement duties."

Opportunity to Connect: “Taking part in National Night Out events gives METRO police officers an opportunity to connect with residents," said MPD Chief Vera Bumpers.

Unleashing Safety & Smiles: METRO's K-9 unit will showcase its skills and interact with children and adults, allowing them to see firsthand how these remarkable dogs assist police.

Throughout the week leading up to National Night Out, MPD has been diligently planning its participation in various neighborhoods and communities within the METRO service area.

Activities Planned

  • Meet and Greets: Officers will be available to meet with residents, answer questions, and share information about community safety.
  • Crime Prevention Sessions: Educational sessions will be conducted to provide residents with valuable tips and information on crime prevention, personal safety, and home security.
  • K-9 Demonstrations: METRO's K-9 unit will showcase its skills and interact with children and adults, allowing them to see firsthand how these remarkable dogs assist police.
  • Interactive Displays: Officers will set up interactive displays featuring police vehicles and equipment, giving people a chance to explore and learn about the tools officers use.
  • Community Resources: Information related to community support services, counseling, and assistance programs will be available.

MPD’s participation in National Night Out events exemplifies its unwavering commitment to our community. If you see officers at your neighborhood event, don’t be shy – they are looking forward to visiting with you!
