Making Holiday Wishes Come True

This holiday season was a time for giving for employees in METRO's Operations Department. In December, they helped organize an adopt-a-school event, bringing Christmas joy to dozens of young students from Franklin Elementary in Houston's Greater East End neighborhood. Individuals from every one of METRO's five bus operating facilities donated to the cause – ensuring each child received every gift on their Christmas wish list.

"They are wonderful kids — just so appreciative and excited to be here," said METRO Transportation Superintendent Gillian Pugh. "Many only asked for necessities like pajamas and toiletries, but we wanted to ensure they got those items and more."

The festivities began with a METRO bus, decked out in holiday décor, arriving at the school to ferry excited students, their teachers, and other school staff to the Fallbrook facility, located 20 miles away. As the bus doors opened, children were welcomed by METRO Bus Operator Deborah Hightower, aka "Mrs. Claus," sitting in the driver's seat.

"We're trying to give them the best Christmas ever," said Hightower.

"METRO employees did all of this themselves," said Daphne Flores, a METRO office administrator. "Throughout the last year, they held fundraisers including food sales and raffles to raise the money."

"We're trying to give them the best Christmas ever," said Hightower.

Gillian Pugh says the adopt-a-school event is one of the year's biggest highlights.

"The holidays are about spreading joy—not just for our families, but for others too," said Pugh. "My colleagues and I understand how blessed we are. Sharing your blessings is not only an opportunity to show gratefulness, but it also feeds your soul."
