Behind the Scenes: The Foundation of Safe, Clean, Reliable Transit

When riders board a bus or train, they may not think about what it takes to keep streets, platforms and transit centers clean. But each night, while much of Houston sleeps, METRO crews are hard at work preparing the system for the next day of service. 

Launched in fall 2025 as part of the METRONow Plan, METRO’s Street Sweeper Program now covers nearly 78 routes across the system, operating Sunday nights through Thursday nights from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. Crews clear debris along rail alignments, bus corridors, transit centers and parking lots to ensure the system is ready for safe and reliable service each morning. 

The program includes eight large street sweepers and eight smaller sweepers designed to reach tighter areas where larger equipment cannot operate. This allows METRO to maintain high-traffic corridors and station areas thoroughly and efficiently. 

Cleanliness is more than appearance. It directly supports safety and reliability, two core pillars of the METRONow Plan. Removing debris from roadways helps prevent flat tires, mechanical issues and unexpected slowdowns that can disrupt service. Clear, well-maintained streets also reduce potential hazards for bus operators and riders. 

“It’s a combination of providing cleaner streets, which helps avoid delays for buses, and removing potential hazards from the roadway,” said Miguel Zavala, Director of Facilities Maintenance. “That supports safer operations and more reliable trips for our customers.” 

By keeping corridors clean and clear, METRO helps ensure buses stay on schedule and operators can focus on delivering a smooth ride. Riders benefit from a system that feels safer, more comfortable and better maintained. 

The Street Sweeper Program covers the entire METRO service area, delivering nearly 1,300 miles of sweeping to maintain some of the region’s busiest transit corridors. 

This work reflects METRO’s broader commitment under METRONow to provide a system that is safe, clean, reliable and accessible. Clean streets are not just cosmetic. They are part of the foundation that supports dependable service and a better experience for everyone who relies on transit.
