New METRO Bus Shelter Design Offers Heat-Resilient Comfort for Riders

The summer heat in Houston is no joke! Having to wait outside in line or even waiting for a bus at a bus stop in this heat can take a toll. That’s why METRO is currently testing a new bus shelter design that aims to make waiting outside more bearable.
METRO’s new perforated bus shelters are designed to withstand the elements, such as rain and heat. Kenneth Brown, METRO’s Director of Service Enhancements, said the new shelters are currently in the pilot testing phase in the Gulfton area.
Brown mentioned that studies have proven that the traditional METRO bus shelters get hotter than the actual temperature outside.
The new perforated bus shelters in the Gulfton area are currently in the pilot testing phase.
Traditional METRO bus shelters typically have 10 to 12 side panels. The perforated panels have tiny holes throughout to allow more airflow while still providing coverage for the bus shelter.
A recent heat mapping campaign revealed that Gulfton is one of several neighborhoods in Houston experiencing extreme heat, with temperatures in these areas reaching up to 14 degrees higher than in the city’s coolest neighborhoods.
“By designing bus shelters that prioritize heat protection and weather resilience, we’re not only improving the rider experience but also investing in a more reliable, accessible transit system,” METRO Board Chair Elizabeth Gonzalez Brock said. “These shelters will help keep our community safer and more comfortable during extreme weather while supporting long-term ridership growth and sustainability in the Gulfton community.”
There are currently 12 perforated shelters installed in the Gulfton area. The new shelters can be found at the following locations:
Gulfton Dr. & Chimney Rock Rd.
Gulfton Dr. & Rampart St.
Gulfton Dr. & Renwick Dr.
Gulfton Dr. & Alder Dr.
Gulfton Dr. & Westward St.
Hillcroft Ave & Gulfton Dr.
Bonhomme Rd & Clarewood Dr.
Fondren Rd & Bellerive Dr.
Kirby Dr. & Westpark Dr.
Hillcroft Ave. & Clarewood Dr.
Hillcroft Ave. & Dashwood Dr.

The perforated bus shelters have tiny holes throughout to allow airflow in the shelter for a cooling effect.
“We know how important it is for our customers to be comfortable while waiting for the bus, not just in terms of temperature, but also safety, cleanliness, and seating,” Brown noted. “Our Chair and our CEO are both committed to getting this right, and we’re going to keep working until we do.”
