Kick-Start Your Career with a METRO Internship
Looking for a hands-on way to explore your career path while making a real impact in the Houston region? A METRO internship offers students the opportunity to gain practical experience, build professional skills, and learn how a large public transit agency serves one of the nation’s most dynamic cities.
METRO offers internship opportunities across a wide range of departments, including communications, construction management, customer service, and bus operations. This year, the program has expanded to 10 weeks, giving students even more time to dive into meaningful projects and gain valuable, real-world experience.
Interns will also get a behind-the-scenes look at how METRO operates. Participants will have opportunities to meet members of the METRO Board of Directors, enjoy lunch with Interim President & CEO Tom Jasien, and tour METRO facilities across the system—all while developing skills that translate directly to the workplace.
“This program gives students a firsthand look at public transit and the important role METRO plays in the community,” said John Matthews, senior organization development specialist. “It’s a strong starting point for anyone interested in building a meaningful career.”
For many, the internship is just the beginning. Several current METRO employees started their careers as interns, including Caroline Vazquez, now a strategic communications coordinator in METRO’s Communications Department.
“My internship gave me the chance to build hands-on skills, gain confidence, and understand how my work made a difference,” Vazquez said. “I knew I wanted to come back after graduation, and that goal became a reality.”
The deadline to apply for METRO’s summer internship program is April 30, 2026. Visit METRO’s careers webpage to learn more and apply.
