Frequently Asked Questions
Q: What is the Summer of Fun Program?
A: The METRO Summer of Fun Program allows students to ride FREE from June 1 - Sept. 1, 2018. Individuals who already have a discount Student METRO Q® Fare Card don't need to do anything - their card will automatically be updated to be part of the program and will revert back to a discount fare card after the program ends.
Q: Can I just use my Student METRO Q® Fare Card and still get free rides?
A: Yes. Your Student METRO Q® Fare Card will automatically be included in the METRO Summer of Fun program, and you will not be charged a fare when you tap during the time period. Any balance that you have on the card will remain intact for after the promotion is over, and your card will revert back to its discounted status.
Q: Where do I get my card?
A: METRO offers three ways to get your card:
- Apply online
- Apply through the mail by calling 713-635-4000 to request a form or download here
- Apply in person at the METRO RideStore (1900 Main St. or 1001Travis St.)
Q: I just got my card. Can I start using it before June 1?
A: Yes, you can start using your new card right away. It will operate as a Student METRO Q® Fare Card with the 50 percent discount from the regular fare of $1.25. You must add your own money to this new card until May 31, 2018. On June 1, 2018, the free contract on this card will activate automatically when you tap the card. Any money you place on this card will remain on the card for your continued use when the card converts back to the regular discounted Student METRO Q® Fare Card on Sept. 2, 2018.
Q: Can I use last year's (summer 2017) "Summer of Fun Pass" since I really didn’t get to use it and still get free rides?
A: Yes. It will be programmed for free rides June 1, 2018 until Sept. 1, 2018. After that, the Summer of Fun card will revert to a regular Student METRO Q® Fare Card, and you will continue to ride at the student discount rate which is half price.
Q: What happens when the Summer of Fun promotion ends?
A: Your fare card will automatically become a discount Student METRO Q® Fare Card, requiring you to pay for all future trips. Students ride at a 50 percent discount.
Q: What if I lose my card?
A: METRO requires all users to register their card before using it. If your card is lost or stolen, METRO will provide one FREE replacement pass – all future replacements will require a fee of $10.
Q: Can I use my Student METRO Q® Fare Card to pay for other riders?
A: No. Like the METRO Q® Fare Card, your discounted fare card can only pay one fare at a time. If you try to tap your card a second time, a red light will flash and the words “NO PASSBACK” will appear on screen. This lets you know that you have already paid your fare, and your card will not be charged for tapping twice.
Q: What about group registrations?
A: Summer programs, schools and camps with 10 or more students can register their students for the Summer of Fun program. For more information on registering your group, email Client.Services@ridemetro.org or Karen Marshall at Karen.Marshall@ridemetro.org or call 713-739-4980.
