Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
Q: What is the Summer of Fun Program?
A: The METRO Summer of Fun Program allows students to ride FREE from June 1 – Aug. 31, 2019. Individuals who already have a discount Student METRO Q® Fare Card don't need to do anything - their card will automatically be updated to be part of the program and will revert back to a discount fare card after the program ends.
Q: Can I just use my Student METRO Q® Fare Card and still get free rides?
A: Yes. Your Student METRO Q® Fare Card will automatically be included in the METRO Summer of Fun program, and you will not be charged a fare when you tap during the time period. Any balance that you have on the card will remain intact during the promotion. On Sept. 1, your card will revert back to its discounted status.
Q: Where do I get my card?
A: METRO offers three ways to get your card:
- Apply through the mail by calling 713-635-4000 to request a form or
- Apply in person at the METRO RideStore at either 1900 Main St. or 1001 Travis St.
Q: I just got my card. Can I start using it before June 1?
A: Yes, you can start using your new card right away. It will operate as a Student METRO Q® Fare Card with the 50 percent discount on all of your trips. You must add your own money to this new card until May 31, 2019. On June 1, 2019, the free contract on this card will activate automatically when you tap the card. Any money you place on this card will remain on the card for your continued use when the card converts back to the regular discounted Student METRO Q® Fare Card on September 1, 2019.
Q: Can I use last year's "Summer of Fun" card since I really didn’t get to use it and still get free rides?
A: Yes. It will be programmed for free rides from June 1, 2019, until Aug. 31, 2019. After that, the Summer of Fun card will revert to a regular Student METRO Q® Fare Card, and you will continue to ride at the student discount rate, which is half price.
Q: What happens when the Summer of Fun promotion ends?
A: Your fare card will automatically become a discounted Student METRO Q® Fare Card, Sept. 1, 2019, requiring you to pay for all future trips. Students ride at a 50 percent discount.
Q: What if I lose my card?
A: METRO requires all users to register their card before using it. If your card is lost or stolen, METRO will provide one FREE replacement card – all future replacements will require a fee of $10.
Q: Can I use my Student METRO Q® Fare Card to pay for other riders?
A: No. Like the METRO Q® Fare Card, your discounted fare card can only pay one fare at a time. If you try to tap your card a second time, a red light will flash and the words “NO PASSBACK” will appear on screen. This lets you know that you have already paid your fare, and your card will not be charged for tapping twice.
Q: What about group registrations?
A: Summer programs, schools and camps with 10 or more students can register their students for the Summer of Fun program. For more information on registering your group, email
Client.Services@ridemetro.org or Karen Marshall at
Karen.Marshall@ridemetro.org or call 713-739-4980.
Q: Can I just pay cash and show my student ID and still get free rides?
A: No. You must use the Student METRO Q® Fare Card for free rides from June 1 – Aug. 31, 2019.
Q: How do I use my Student METRO Q® Fare Card for the Summer of Fun Program?
A: Just tap your Student METRO Q® Fare Card on the Q Box as you would normally do. No value will be deducted during the Summer of Fun Program. All of your trips are free June 1 through Aug. 31, 2019. The Q Box is located at the front of the bus, next to the operator, and on all METRORail platforms.
Q: How does the Summer of Fun Program cards issued compare to a regular Student METRO Q® Fare Card?
A: There is no difference between the cards. METRO’s system will not deduct value for the summer months, June 1 through Aug. 31, 2019. The system then reverts back on Sept. 1, 2019 and students will resume paying for all future trips. You then load money on the card and ride for half price.
