Monthly Total
There were 5,053K boardings in May 2017 compared to 4,832K in May 2016, an increase of 221K boardings (or 5 percent increase) on local bus service. A positive calendar mix of one extra weekday and one less Sunday contributed to ridership growth. Additionally, improved weather in May 2017 relative to May 2016 contributed to an overall ridership increase.
Average Daily Ridership: Weekday / Saturday / Sunday
Average daily ridership remained flat on Weekday and increased on Saturday and Sunday in May 2017 compared to 2016. Saturday average daily ridership increased by 4K (or 4 percent increase), and Sunday average daily ridership increased by 4K boardings (or 5 percent increase) in 2017.
Light Rail
Monthly Total
There were 1,566K boardings on all three light rail lines in May 2017, compared to 1,462K boardings in May 2016, an increase of 104K boardings (or 7 percent). Ridership increased on all three rail lines in May 2016. Relative to May 2016, Red line ridership increased by 2%; Green line ridership increased by 63%; and Purple line ridership increased by 31%. A positive calendar mix of one extra weekday and one less Sunday contributed to ridership growth. Improved weather in May 2017 relative to May 2016 also contributed to increased ridership. Another factor contributing to a ridership increase is the extension of the Green line to Magnolia Park Transit Center on January 11, 2017.

Average light rail Weekday ridership increased by 3K (or 6 percent) in May 2017 compared to May 2016. Average light rail Saturday daily ridership increased by 3K (or 11 percent) while average light rail Sunday ridership increased by 2K (or 7 percent). Average Weekday, Saturday, and Sunday ridership on the Red Line increased by 1 percent, 4 percent, and 0 percent over May 2016 respectively. Average Weekday, Saturday and Sunday ridership on the Green line showed increases of 64 percent, 66 percent, and 63 percent and the Purple line showed increases of 31 percent, 28 percent, and 27 percent over May 2016 respectively. As stated in the paragraph above, the Green line was extended to Magnolia Park Transit Center on January 11, 2017, resulting in two additional stations relative to the previous year.

Weekday average daily ridership increased by approximately 3K boardings (or 1 percent increase). Saturday average daily ridership increased by approximately 7K boardings (or 5 percent increase). Sunday average daily ridership increased by approximately 6K boardings (or 5 percent increase).

There were 698K Park & Ride boardings in May 2017 compared to 691K boardings in May 2016, an increase of 7K boardings (or 1 percent increase). A positive calendar mix of one extra weekday and one fewer Sunday relative to the previous year contributed to ridership growth. Improved weather in May 2017 relative to May 2016 also contributed in an overall ridership increase.
Average Daily Ridership: Weekday
Average Weekday ridership in May 2017 was 31K boardings compared to 33K boardings April 2016, a decrease of -2K boardings (or 5 percent decrease). According to the most recent Origin-Destination Survey, 94 percent of all Park and Ride trips are work-based trips. The increase in unemployment relative to the previous year is a major contributor to the decrease in ridership.

There were 7,317K boardings on the entire fixed-route network in May 2017 compared to 6,985K boardings in May 2016, an increase of 332K boardings (or 5 percent increase).

Average daily ridership for the entire fixed-route network increased on Weekday, Saturday, and Sunday. Average weekday ridership increased by 1K boardings (or less than 1 percent increase), average Saturday ridership increased by 7K boardings (or 5 percent increase), and average Sunday ridership increased by 6K boardings (or 5 percent increase).
