There were 4,665K boardings in February 2018 compared to 4,809K in February 2017, a decrease of 144K boardings (or 3 percent decrease) on local bus service. The weather and fewer special events in February 2018 compared to February 2017 contributed to a ridership loss. There were two weather days in 2018 compared to one weather day in 2017. In addition, February 2017 had five days of Super Bowl LI activities compared to zero special events in February 2018.

Average daily ridership decreased on Weekday, Saturday and Sunday in February 2018 compared to February 2017. Average Weekday ridership decreased by approximately 6K boardings (or 3 percent decrease), average Saturday ridership decreased by approximately 6K (or 4 percent decrease), and average Sunday ridership decreased by approximately 6K boardings (or 6 percent increase) in February 2018 compared to February 2017.
Light Rail
Monthly Total
There were 1,476K boardings on all three light rail lines in February 2018 compared to 1,698K boardings in February 2017, a decrease of 222K boardings (or 13 percent). Red line ridership decreased by 12 percent, Green line ridership decreased by 26 percent, and Purple line ridership decreased by 9 percent in February 2018 compared to February 2017. There are two main reasons for the ridership loss in February 2018 compared to the previous year. The primary reason was the presence of pre-Super Bowl LI activities in Houston in February 2017 and their absence in February 2018 when the site of the Super Bowl shifted to Minneapolis while the secondary reason was the negative weather impact noted.

Average Weekday ridership on the Red, Green and Purple lines decreased by 3K boardings (or 6 percent), increased by less than 1K boardings (or 7 percent) and increased by less than 1K boardings (or 12 percent) respectively in February 2018 compared to February 2017. Average Saturday ridership on the Red, Green, and Purple lines decreased by 8K boardings (or 26 percent), decreased by less than 1K boardings (or 14 percent) and decreased by less 1K boardings (or 15 percent) respectively in February 2018 compared to February 2017. Average Sunday ridership on the Red, Green, and Purple lines decreased by 4K (or 17 percent), decreased by less than 1K boardings (or 8 percent), and decreased by less than 1K boardings (or 0 percent) in February 2018 compared to February 2017 respectively.
