METRO's Evacuee Relief Role
September 9, 2005
Houston METRO is offering support to refugees from Hurricane Katrina. METRO's
current efforts include:
- A program begun Wednesday in cooperation with Continental Airlines in which
METRO runs shuttles from Reliant Park to Bush Intercontinental Airport for
evacuees who are relocating to other areas. The service runs from 5 a.m. to 11
p.m. and utilizes METROLift vans, regular buses, and some of the four GM Hybrid
buses donated by GM/Allison. There were 14 trips between 6 a.m. and 11 a.m.
- Expanded shuttle service from Reliant Park and the George R. Brown
Convention Center to area hospitals. Seventeen METROLift vans and their METRO
operators are providing the service on a 24-hour basis under the coordination of
the METRO Police Department.
- Transportation, in cooperation with the New Orleans Housing Authority and
the Houston Mayor's Office, for evacuees moving to temporary housing in
Galveston. Fourteen trips have been made since Monday, transporting
approximately 600 evacuees.
