METROVan Offers Way To Share The Pain At The Pump

August 15, 2005

Is the rising cost of gas giving you the summertime blues? Why not reduce time, cost and stress from your daily commute by joining METROVan? As an extra incentive for those enrolling before Sept. 1, METRO will waive the van lease fee for two months (a value of up to $85 per month, depending on the type of van).

In partnership with the Houston-Galveston Area Council's Commute Solutions Month, the two-month incentive will be credited to new enrollees' September and October fees. While new enrollees still will be responsible for covering their METROVan group's fuel, parking/toll fees and other costs during the promotion period, individual out-of-pocket costs can be reduced significantly by sharing the costs among fellow vanpool members for September, October and beyond.

Other benefits for commuters who use METROVan include saving wear-and-tear on their personal vehicles and helping to reduce regional air pollution and traffic congestion. Vanpool groups also get free use of the Houston-area's High Occupancy Vehicle (HOV) lanes and the freedom to establish their own schedules and meeting places.

Once the two-month promotion ends, METROVan members will continue to receive a $35 per month allowance to help defray their commuting costs. This ongoing incentive would begin in November for those taking advantage of the August promotion.

Forming a vanpool of seven to 15 people is even easier today, with METRO's free RideMatching service. By simply registering on METRO's Web site (, commuters immediately can receive contact information for existing or potential vanpools in their area.

METROVan also provides peace of mind through the Guaranteed RideHome program, which offers three free rides home per year via taxi or rental car in the event of unexpected emergencies.

The METROVan program is available throughout the entire eight-county Houston-Galveston region, which covers the counties of Brazoria, Chambers, Fort Bend, Galveston, Harris, Liberty, Montgomery and Waller.
