Arts in Transit Palm Center Transit Center
The Palm Center Transit Center Station features the women of the Civil Rights Movement in Houston: Lulu Belle White, former head of the NAACP Houston branch; Hattie Mae White, former HISD board member and the first African American elected to public office in Texas since Reconstruction; Barbara Charlene Jordan, who was elected to the Texas Senate in 1966 and served as President Pro Tempore. Each woman in her own way was instrumental in encouraging blacks to vote, seek public office, and represent African American interests.
