SORT

Mission

“The SORT mission is to provide the Authority with a group of highly trained, skilled, well-disciplined, and qualified officers who provide rapid coordinated assistance during crisis incidents. Establishment of the SORT Unit recognizes that the availability of such highly trained officers can substantially reduce the risk of injury or loss of life to patrons, employees, police officers and suspects. The SORT Unit provides the department with a first response tactical team (SWAT) trained to respond to special situations, make assessments, make necessary notifications, provide the department and Authority with pertinent information regarding a situation, and take immediate action.

The SORT Unit gathers intelligence and information and briefs other responding tactical teams. A successful SORT operation is one that safely concludes with the minimum application of force and apprehension of the offender(s). This is not to be construed as reluctance to use force, including deadly force when necessary, but to establish the operating philosophy of the SORT Team Unit. Every operation will be conducted with the utmost regard for human life.

The SORT Unit also serves high risk and/or felony warrants and conducts high intensity patrol where needed.

The SORT Unit comprises:

  • 1 Lieutenant
  • 1 Sergeant
  • 8 Full-time Officers
  • 2 Full-time Bomb Techs
  • 6 Part-time Officers
