Field Personnel

More than 2,500 people work in the various roles shown below. These are primarily union positions based at various METRO operating facilities throughout the Houston region. Bus repair mechanics maintain our bus fleet and ensure on-time performance for our customers.

If you're newly hired into certain bus mechanic job functions and employed with METRO for at least three months, you can begin to earn an incentive of up to $8,000.

Newly hired operators with a full Commercial Driver's License and Passenger endorsement (P) can earn an incentive of up to $4,000 ($2,000 after approximately 5 months and an additional $2,000 after approximately 17 months).

Newly hired operators with a Class C driver's license can earn an incentive of up to $2,500 ($1,250 after approximately 5 months and an additional $1,250 after approximately 17 months). To be eligible for this incentive, a full Commercial Driver's License and Passenger endorsement (P) must first be obtained. METRO will pay for you to get your CDL.

If you speak Spanish, Vietnamese, Chinese, French, Arabic, or American Sign Language, you’re eligible for a bilingual pay incentive as well.

Our facilities maintenance department includes cleaners, mechanics, plumbers and others who keep our facilities in a state of good repair.

If you're newly hired into certain facility maintenance job functions and employed with METRO for at least three months, you can begin to earn an incentive of up to $8,000

METRO operates three light rail lines in and around downtown Houston. We're always recruiting for light rail operators to support METRO's mission of providing safe, clean, reliable, accessible and friendly public transportation services.

Service drivers operate smaller vehicles that don't require a Commercial Driver's License (CDL). These vehicles operate on the METRO curb2curb shared-ride service and on select METRO bus routes.

Newly hired service drivers with a Class C driver's license can earn an incentive of up to $2,000 ($1,000 after approximately five months and an additional $1,000 after approximately 17 months).

Administrative Staff

More than 1,500 people work in the various areas shown below. These are non-union positions, all of which are located in the Houston area. Most are based at our downtown corporate offices at 1900 Main St. Non-union employees are paid every two weeks. Select any tab to learn more about working in that area.

 

METRO's Bus Operations team provides quality control so we can provide an optimal level of service to communities throughout the region. We employ people across all experience levels in areas such as service planning, scheduling and more. Positions include:

  • Administrative staff

METRO's Communications department functions as an in-house agency for the Authority with divisions that manage traditional and digital marketing, media relations, community engagement, market research, and communication services. The team creates and distributes information about METRO services and initiatives for customers, the community at-large, media outlets and METRO employees. Positions include:

  • Account executives (marketing consultants)
  • Graphic designers
  • Media, Social Media and Multimedia specialists

  • Printing and mail services personnel

METRO's Customer Service team provides quick, timely and informative responses to questions and comments. We oversee a customer call center and multiple RideStore locations where customers can obtain or reload fare cards, pick up route schedules and more. In addition to customer service representatives, positions include:

The METRO Facilities Maintenance department ensures that our operating and public facilities are maintained in a state of good repair. We employ people across all experience levels including:

Finance provides the management oversight and control of all financial functions within METRO. We employ people across all experience levels in areas including:

METRO's Fleet Services team makes sure all parts and technology on our vehicles are maintained in a state of good repair. We employ people across all experience levels overseeing everything from body repair to intelligent transportation systems. Positions include:

The METRO Human Resources Department provides direction and guidance to all departments on hiring, benefits, wellness, employee training, legal compliance and more. HR oversees the following areas:

The METRO Legal department provides legal advice to all departments and the Board of Directors on compliance with various federal, state and local laws. It also represents the agency in litigation. The METRO Police Department (MPD) employs people across all experience levels including data analysts, project coordinators, METRO Fare Inspectors and METRO Police Officers.

METRO's Operations Management team provides support for the execution of the Authority's daily transit operations. We employ people across all experience levels overseeing budget analysis, business administration and more. Positions include:

If you're outside the METRO network, you can see what's available and apply by logging in with your METRO username and password.

Every job description page has an apply now button. Just click or tap that button to log in to your current account. If you’re a first-time applicant, you’ll be asked to create a new account with an option to receive future notifications about new job postings. 

Once you’re logged in, you can complete and submit your application.

The METRO application process is mobile-friendly, so you can easily apply from a computer, phone or tablet.

Paid time off (PTO) is determined as follows (certain restrictions and stipulations apply):

Employee days and paid holidays may not be carried over from year to year.

Full-time union employees who have completed at least six months of employment with METRO are also eligible to receive paid sick days, if needed.


For full-time, non-union employees:


Paid time off (PTO) is determined as follows (certain restrictions and stipulations apply):

The six month waiting period for paid vacation credits is waived for hourly employees who transfer to salaried status with more than six months of employment with METRO.

Full-time, non-union employees also receive a bank of 80 hours for paid sick leave during the calendar year.

METRO observes nine designated holidays during the calendar year:

  • New Year’s Day
  • Martin Luther King, Jr. Day
  • Memorial Day
  • Juneteenth
  • Independence Day
  • Labor Day
  • Thanksgiving Day
  • Day after Thanksgiving
  • Christmas

Union employees who perform work on recognized holidays earn eight hours of holiday pay at their regular rate, plus pay for actual hours worked on the holiday at the rate of 1.5 times their regular rate of pay. If a holiday falls on an employees' day off, that employee will still receive holiday pay.

Retirement Benefits

Yes. For newly hired, full-time union and non-union employees, METRO offers both of the following:

  • 457(b) deferred compensation plan
  • 401(a) defined contribution plan

Both are administered by Empower Retirement.

METRO automatically contributes 2% of your annual salary to your 401(a).

Additionally, if you choose to contribute money to your 457(b) deferred compensation plan, METRO will match your contribution up to 4% and put it in your 401(a). That money will not appear on your paycheck; it's deposited directly in your 401(a) retirement plan.

To receive retirement funds from your 401(a), newly hired, full-time union and non-union employees must meet both of the following eligibility requirements:

  • Work at METRO for a minimum of two years
  • Work at least 1,000 hours per year

The vesting schedule is as follows:

Non-union employees:

You qualify for normal retirement at age 65, with five years of vested service.

You qualify for early retirement if you meet either of these criteria:

  • Age 55, with 15 years vested service
  • Age 60, with five years vested service


Union employees:

You qualify for normal retirement if you meet either of these criteria:

  • Age 60, with five years vested service
  • Any age with 28 years vested service

You qualify for early retirement at age 55 with 25 years vested service.

All retirees (both union and non-union) receive $20,000 in life insurance at no cost.

Other Benefits

Yes. All regular, full-time union and non-union employees are eligible to receive up to $5,000 in tuition reimbursement per calendar year when attending an accredited school. To be eligible, an employee needs to complete six months of employment with METRO prior to the start of the course, degree or certification.

Yes. All METRO employees receive a transit pass for themselves and a spouse (if applicable). The pass entitles the user to ride the following METRO transit services free of charge at all times:

  • Local bus
  • Park & Ride commuter express bus
  • METRORail
  • METRORapid
  • METRO curb2curb

Working remotely isn’t suitable for all positions. No employee is entitled to, nor guaranteed the opportunity to, telecommute.

Telecommuting schedules are determined at the department management’s discretion, consistent with the operational needs of the department.

No teleworker will be considered 100% full-time remote. Teleworkers may be required to spend a minimum number of workdays per week, pay period, or month at their regular METRO worksite. Teleworkers may be required to attend all assigned meetings or be present in the office on a regularly scheduled telecommuting day. When possible, management will provide as much advance notice as possible of a change to the employee’s telecommuting schedule.

All telecommuting work week schedules may change or be terminated at any time at the request of the employee’s department management.
