Q: What are the hours of operation and address of the METRO Police Department?
A: METRO Police operates 24 hours a day every day of the year.

Q: Does the MPD have a tip line or emergency phone number?
A: Yes. To offer tips to METRO Police, you may call the METRO Police non-emergency line at 713-224-2677 (COPS), or dial #673 (#MPD) from your cell phone. You may also call CRIME STOPPERS at 713-222-8477 (TIPS). For emergencies dial 911.

Q: How do I obtain a traffic accident report?
A: There are three ways to obtain an accident report. The quickest method is to use our online Accident Report Database. You also have the option of making your request in person at the Records Window of the METRO Police Administrative Office, Monday - Friday, 8:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m., or mailing a written request to the following address.

Q: How do I file a police report?
A: Call METRO Police at 713-224-2677 (COPS). The information you give over the phone determines whether or not a police officer will be dispatched to speak with you in person.

Q: How do I report a crime on METRO property?
A: To report a crime that has occurred on METRO property, such as a bus stop/shelter or light rail platform, Park & Ride lot or transit center, building, bus, or light rail vehicle, inform the Bus or METRORail Operator immediately. You can also report crimes (non-emergency situations) by calling METRO Police at 713-224-2677 (COPS). For emergencies dial 911.

Q: How do I report a suspicious package?
A: Report any suspicious package to the Bus or METRORail Operator immediately. When contacting the METRORail Operator, use the emergency intercoms located adjacent to each doorway inside the light rail vehicle. You may also call police by dialing 911 at a pay phone located on the station platform, or dial #673 (#MPD) on your cell phone (while keeping a safe distance from any suspicious package). There is no cost to place a 911 call at a station pay phone. Again, do not use cellular phones, radios or anything that emits an electronic signal within 300 feet of a suspicious package.

Q: How do I pay a fare evasion citation?
A: You may choose to either pay METRO a $75 administrative fee within 30 days of receiving the citation, or you may choose to resolve the citation through the City of Houston Municipal Courts. If you choose to pay METRO the $75 fee, DO NOT go to court or contact the City of Houston. The complaint against you will be dismissed without any criminal finding upon receipt of payment within 30 days. By choosing this option, you waive your right to a jury trial. If you choose to not waive that right, you may proceed through the judicial system by following the instructions on the citation. For more information visit fare evasion.

Q: Do I need a permit to take pictures on the Houston METRO transit system?
A: No permit is needed for the public to take pictures on the METRO system. Photography is permitted in public areas. However, the photographer and/or photography equipment cannot interfere with the safe movement of people or operation of vehicles. For complete guidelines see METRO photography and film guidelines.

Q: Is smoking allowed in the outdoor areas of METRO?
A: METRO prohibits smoking in a covered or enclosed public ground transportation facility. This includes bus stop shelters and transit centers. METRORail platforms are also non-smoking areas in accordance with City of Houston Ordinance No. 2005-245.

Q: Is it OK to drink alcoholic beverages at bus stop shelters?
A: No. Consuming alcoholic beverages is unlawful anywhere on the METRO system. This includes bus stop shelters, transit centers, and METRORail platforms.

Q: Do officers of the METRO Police Department have the same authority as Houston Police Department officers?
A: Yes, the METRO Police Officers have the same law enforcement authority as other licensed peace officers in the State of Texas, including Houston Police Department officers.

Q: What is the jurisdiction of the METRO Police Department?
A: The jurisdiction of the METRO Police Department is defined as any part of the county in which the 1 cent METRO sales tax is collected. This area spans approximately 1,285 square-miles, which includes most of Harris County and portions of Montgomery, Fort Bend, and Waller Counties. The METRO service area crosses several political jurisdictions and METRO Police has concurrent jurisdiction with those police agencies. However, the METRO Police Department is the primary police agency whenever an incident occurs on METRO property, such as bus stops/shelters, METRORail platforms, Park & Ride lots, transit centers, buses, and light rail vehicles. METRO Police also has primary jurisdiction of the High Occupancy Vehicle (HOV) network, as well as other right-of-ways or locations where transit-related incidents occur.

Q: What types of crime does the MPD investigate?
A: MPD investigates all crime occurring on METRO property or right-of-ways (see above). METRO Police also act on information received from Crime Stoppers and individuals who report criminal activity observed on METRO property or right-of-ways.

Q: Does METRO Police participate in Crime Stoppers?

Q: Do MPD officers work with other law enforcement agencies?
A:Yes. METRO Police participates in the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) Joint Terrorism Task Force and the Houston Police Department Regional Auto Theft Task Force. METRO Police also works collaboratively with other police departments within the METRO service area to solve cases affecting each police jurisdiction.

Q: How do I apply for employment as a METRO Police Officer?
A: Information about the duties, minimum requirements and selection process for the position of METRO Police Officer are included under the ‘Safety & Security’ tab of the METRO website on Recruiting. To apply for a position, it is necessary to visit a different area of the website. METRO has an online application process that allows persons to apply only for positions that are available and for which applicants are being solicited.

Return to the website home page and click on the ‘Opportunities’ tab, and then on Careers at METRO. If a police officer position is available, it will be listed on this page.
