We Care About Our Community

METRO is much more than just a transit services provider. We play an active role in the community, proudly partnering with other organizations to support strong neighborhoods, improve quality of life and give back to Houston-area residents. Here are just a few examples:

METROLift representative carrying water and a grocery bag alongside a METROLift paratransit van

During COVID-19, we partnered with the city of Houston's Food Access Program, led by the Mayor's Office for People with Disabilities.

Employees and contractors for our paratransit service METROLift worked together to load boxes of shelf-stable goods, fresh produce and basic necessities onto METROLift vehicles. We then scheduled and executed deliveries of this food and water to hundreds of families in need.

Donations to the Houston Food Bank made the deliveries possible.

During the 2017 storm, METRO moved 15,000 people into shelters, helped Red Cross supplies reach their destinations and provided transit for essential services.

"We would have not been able to get people to the various shelters without the help of METRO. We certainly appreciate them. They have gone over and above.”

- Sylvester Turner, City of Houston Mayor

METRO, BikeHouston, Greater Northside Management and City of Houston District H partnered to clean up the METRO Cavalcade bike lane project from I-45 to Irvington Boulevard. The event was a huge success, allowing METRO to showcase our commitment to providing a variety of ways to connect to the system. The Cavalcade bike lane connects residents to the Red Line and numerous bus routes in the area.

Event participants were introduced to the new bike amenities, improvements including new ADA ramps, a buffered bike lane and safe pedestrian crossings along Cavalcade.

The METRO Police Department's Blue Santa and his elves have delivered gifts, treats, hugs and smiles to people in need throughout our community.

This includes children who are undergoing medical treatment and families receiving grief counseling for the recent loss of a loved one.
