Tips for screen readers

Window-Eyes

These are tips and suggestions for users of the Window-Eyes screen reader from Ai Squared.

  1. When navigating web pages Window-Eyes uses Browse Mode. This mode is either ON or OFF. When ON, web pages are navigated as if they were regular documents. In addition, various navigation shortcuts are available.
  2. In order to enter information into a form, (such as to look up a route or intersection), find the Edit field while Browse Mode is ON and press Enter. This will turn OFF Browse Mode and you will be able to type in your information. If there are additional form fields, press Tab to move forward to each new field to fill in. Once the information has been typed in, press Enter to submit the form. The new page will load and Browse Mode will be ON again.
  3. To navigate a Combo Box, (drop down list), you must first press Enter on the Combo Box to turn OFF Browse Mode. Next press Alt-Down Arrow to expand all the choices. Finally, use the UP or DOWN arrows and Window-Eyes will speak each item. You can also use the first letter of the item you are looking for, (such as W to reach Westheimer RD).
