FREE RIDES RECOGNIZE 100 MILLION

METRO Celebrates 100 Million Boardings and new Trains with Free METRORail Rides April 9

April 3, 2013

METRORail’s 18 light-rail vehicles (LRVs) have traveled more than four million miles (the equivalent of five trips to the moon and back) recording 100 million boardings in the process. METRORail reached this milestone four years ahead of schedule. It’s been a good roll made even better by a day of free rides on the rail system  and the introduction of new rail cars.

100 million riders“This 100-million-milestone is incredible!  What’s more telling is the fact that it was done without any reserve cars.  This clearly demonstrates that rail is a critical component to successful transit in the region,” said METRO Board Chairman Gilbert Garcia.

The first two Siemens S70 H2 rail cars roll into service at the 100 Million Rider Celebration, April 9 at 10 AM at UH-Downtown station and then moves to the Downtown Transit Center at 1900 Main.

The day’s festivities include the first rides on board METRO’s all new and just commissioned S70 vehicles as well as a stop at the Downtown Transit Center (1900 Main) for a special celebration.

“We are on a roll! With this milestone, and next year’s opening of three new rail lines, we’re looking to the future while applauding the past,” said Interim President & CEO Tom Lambert. “These two new rail cars will be joined by another 17 new Siemens H2 rail cars over the next year. This is great news for passengers, and the entire community.”

The April 9th free rides for passengers on the rail system will help encourage the use of public transportation and reduce traffic congestion on Houston streets.
