Media Alert: Its America Bus Demonstration On State Highway 288

As part of the Intelligent Transportation Society of America (ITS America) annual conference now taking place in Houston, METRO and the Minnesota Valley Transit Authority (MVTA) will be conducting a bus demonstration project along the shoulder of State Highway 288, today through Wednesday, May 5, 2010.

Using a MVTA bus, the demonstration will highlight a Driver Assist System developed by the Intelligent Vehicles Lab at the University of Minnesota.

This system provides lane assistance – helping a driver maintain proper vehicle placement in a narrow lane – and collision avoidance awareness, providing alerts and warnings for obstacles in the front and sides of vehicles.

ITS America, established in 1991, fosters the use of advanced technologies in surface transportation systems. METRO has been a key player in ITS America, with METRO Police Chief Tom Lambert serving as a past chairman.

The demonstrations begin at 2 p.m. today and will conclude Wednesday morning. They will run from the George R. Brown Convention Center along SH 288 at Airport.
