METRO PARTNERS WITH HOUSTON GRAND OPERA
November 5, 2007
METRO supports the arts and our diverse community by promoting The Refuge, a new opera produced by Houston Grand Opera (HGO).
The Refuge, written by poet Leah Lax with music composed by Christopher Theofanidis, tells individual stories of immigrants who came to Houston looking for a better life.
“Through this partnership, METRO can present transportation information to immigrant communities who may otherwise not know how to use our services,” said METRO Director of Marketing Dhelfor Balbin.
The Refuge was commissioned under the auspices of Song of Houston, an educational and outreach initiative, designed to connect HGO to its community through creative collaborations.
“The Refuge is a portrait in words and music of our diverse and vibrant city,” said HGO General Director Anthony Freud. “It is the first fruit of our Song of Houston project, in which we share the stories of extraordinary journeys to Houston. METRO, the company that connects the Houston metropolitan area, seems to us to be the ideal partner to help us spread the word about The Refuge. We’re delighted with this partnership.”
The Refuge debuts on Saturday, November 10, with two performances at 2 p.m. and 7:30 p.m.
Take METRORail to the Preston Station and walk four blocks to the Wortham Theater.
