METRO Onboard With Google Transit

METRO and Google Transit are mapping the way to a successful trip on transit.

METRO recently joined the company of some 70 transit agencies across the nation that have partnered with Google Transit to promote public transportation by integrating their transit routes with Google’s maps.

“First, Google offers some very nice features that most transit agencies just don’t have the resources to provide,” said Raequel Roberts, associate vice president of marketing, media and corporate communications at METRO. “Secondly, it’s a great way to get people to METRO’s Web site to learn more about our services.”

Google Transit will supplement METRO’s current trip planner.  Both generate a transit itinerary with step-by-step instructions and walking distances based on one’s starting point and destination. Those not familiar with Houston may find the Google Transit site an easier introduction to Houston and its transit system.

“Google Transit is layered with Google Maps that provide users with a very interactive experience,” added Roberts. “It includes access to local traffic, aerial maps, restaurant information and much more. The latest feature is Google Mobile, which posts your trip plan on your mobile phone. These features are free to our patrons and no cost to METRO. That’s a win-win.”

One innovative feature is Google Transit’s three-dimensional street view maps.

“We’re very excited to be partnering with Google,” said Roberts. “The objective is to help raise awareness of public transportation and attract new riders. Google is providing a common place for people to find transit information, and there they provide a link from Google Transit to our Web site.”
