AVOIDING THEFT-IN-TRANSIT DURING THE HOLIDAYS

The holiday season has arrived – it’s a time for friends, family and lots of shopping.

It’s also the time of year when many thieves look for bargains themselves.

METRO police want to remind all patrons - don’t be victims of theft. Secure your belongings before someone else does.

Whether you’re waiting for the bus or train, MPD wants you to be fully aware of your surroundings.

Keep your eyes peeled for pickpockets. Thieves are always looking for the easy target – the opened purse, the not-so-stowed away wallet, unattended packages and the distracted rider.

Here are some helpful tips to keep in mind when riding:

  • Stay alert on the bus or train.
  • Always zip or clasp your purse to protect your valuables.
  • Carry your wallet in your front pocket instead of your pants.
  • Place your package or bag on your lap or near you. If the bag is too big – place it under your seat (with the handle looped around your ankle), or stow it in the overhead compartment.
  • Don’t overload yourself with multiple packages or bags.
  • Try to keep your jewelry covered to avoid unwanted attention. Make sure the stone on a ring is on the palm side of your hand for protection.

If you use the Park & Ride - please store your valuables such as wallets, purses, cell phones and electronic devices out of sight, or better yet, take them with you.

If you’re a victim of theft, or if you see something or someone suspicious, please call METRO police at 713-224-COPS (2677), or dial #MPD on your cell phone.
