Welcome to the Kids' Stop…
where safety and fun intersect

Riding transit is certainly an adventure! You can go to the zoo, museums, parks, stadiums and to many other exciting destinations with the tap of your METRO Q® Fare Card.
However, before you board, it’s important to know how to ride the METRO system. Parents/Guardians – this is where we need your help. Safety is a priority at METRO, and we want to make sure everyone rides safely, especially our youngest riders.
In the coming months, METRO will begin to roll out a Kids’ Stop Web site tailored for kids and led by yours truly, Fred the Safety Tread. In the meantime – we put together some bus safety tips so that you can help your children familiarize themselves with the basics of riding METRO buses and METRORail.

We’ve also included a fun activity book that will help educate kids on rail safety.
As parents/guardians, you take on a very active role in your child’s life. So, we thank you in advance for taking on this homework assignment to reinforce the importance of riding transit safely. |

Do you like the color green? We do.
Did you know that by riding METRO you’re being green? That’s right. It’s important to take care of the environment, and using mass transit is just one way you can contribute to a cleaner tomorrow.
METRO buses are hybrid-diesel vehicles – sounds fancy, huh? What that means is they run on an electric motor powered by batteries and diesel fuel. This unique combination reduces the amount of fuel consumed by using the electric motor at low speeds and the diesel engine at highway speeds. In addition to lower fuel consumption, fewer harmful chemicals are released into the air. METRO also makes sure all of its buses are in tip-top shape with regular maintenance checks. A healthier vehicle means a healthier environment.
METRO also helps protect the air we breathe with METRORail. The train is the city’s 7.5-mile electrically powered transportation line that decreases the amount of pollution; both air and noise. Did you know each train car can carry up to 200 people, sitting and standing? METRO plans to build five more rail lines. One is already under construction. In the end – all the light-rail lines will improve the flow of traffic and reduce congestion.
METRO's vehicles are not the only way it contributes to a stronger environment. METRO also recycles. As part of its conservation program, METRO recycles the water it uses to wash its fleet of 1,200 buses. METRO also recycles scrap metal, tires, batteries, wood palettes and oil. In addition, the agency uses energy-efficient fluorescent lamps throughout its facilities.
