Arts in Transit Redline
The METRO Solutions Arts in Transit Program calls for the creation of public art pieces for new transit stops METRO is building as a part of METRO Solutions Phase 2 program. The Arts in Transit Program will be tailored to the character of these neighborhoods and based on a collaborative approach with the community. Building on the success of the art installations of the Main Street Light Rail line, the METRO Solutions Arts in Transit Program will provide transit passengers and the surrounding neighborhoods with a rich variety of artwork. METRO’s objective is that art installations will respect and celebrate the different characteristics of the surrounding neighborhoods through a focus on local context and a community-based process for the selection of qualified artists for the stations, transit centers, and other facilities.

THE ART IN TRANSIT PROGRAM

“The visual quality of the nation’s mass transit systems has a profound impact on transit patrons and the community at large. Good design and art can improve the appearance and safety of a facility, give vibrancy to its public spaces, and make patrons feel welcome.”

– Federal Transit Administration

Houston embraces its diverse cultures and the civic art that so vividly showcases them. One of the city’s best examples is the initial Art in Transit Program installations along the Main Street light rail line. Now the East End Corridor project extends the original scope, respecting and celebrating the character of each neighborhood along the route, while continuing to demonstrate the unifying power of art.
